Identification.

The most common nuisance mole in Georgia is the Eastern mole. These animals are not classified as rodents they are in fact, mammals. Adult moles generally weigh between 3 to 4oz. and measure 6" to 7" in length. Moles are insectivores with a diet consisting primarily of earthworms and grubs. Moles are solitary creatures living in underground seclusion, coming to the surface only by accident. Due to moles insatiable appetite, they remain on a constant search for food, burrowing and tunneling underground.

How, when and why they become a nuisance pest.

Most Georgians have never seen a mole, due to their reclusive, underground behavior. Usually they notice active moles on their property by identifying their surface tunnels that the moles produce while on their constant search for food. Moles are active in Atlanta year-round but, surface tunneling is more noticeable from spring to late fall and during periods of heavy rain when their food sources move closer to the surface.

Moles prefer loose, moist soil abundant with earthworms and grubs. To prevent moles from taking up residence in your lawn compacting soil and reducing soil moisture may be effective. Treating your lawn with a pesticide that is effective on grubs may also help deter moles from your property.

Once mole activity has been identified the only effective mole control is to trap the moles. There are hundreds of home remedies and mole deterrents on the market today that are ineffective. These remedies range from chewing gum and human hair to razor blades and poisons all the way up to high dollar ultrasonic devices and castor oils that do not work. The time and money wasted on these “old wives tails” and “quick fixes” could be spent on an effective resolution to mole problems.

To effectively trap moles their “active runs” and burrows must be identified. After their active tunnels are identified an effective mole trap must be placed in, over or around the active tunnel to trap the mole. Effective mole control is very laborious and time consuming. Done properly though, trapping is the ONLY way to remove active moles from ones lawn or garden.

The need for effective mole control is quite a common occurrence in the greater Atlanta area. Unfortunately, people do not appreciate the importance of moles in the eco-system with their ability to control harmful insects. Before attempting mole control or hiring a professional mole exterminator to do so, make sure that the presence of the mole is truly unbearable.
